Moving MS Outlook Data to a New Computer

When you get a new computer, how do you move your MS Outlook data (address books, messages, calendars) to the new computer?
- Windows XP has a transfer application. To find it, click Start>>All Programs>>Accessories>>System Tools>>Files and Settings Transfer Wizard.
- However, you don't need to use this feature: Outlook has excellent export and import functions.

Here's how to use Outlook's export/import tools:

Export from the 'old' computer
- In your old computer, open Outlook. Click File>>Import and Export.
- Click "Export to a file"
- Click "Next"
- Select Comma Separated Values (Windows)
- Click Next
- Select the folder from which you want to export (probably the Inbox folders under Personal and perhaps Archive)
- Under "Save exported file as:" enter a name. Note the path to that file
- Click Next. Double check that you're exporting the correct thing
- Click Finish
- Burn this new file to a CD or DVD. You can then try to import it into Outlook on the new computer directly from the disc

Import to the 'new' computer
If importing from the CD doesn't work, copy the exported Outlook file to the hard drive
To import the file, open Outlook
- Click File>>Import and Export
- Select "Import from another program or file"
- Click Next
- Select Comma Selected Value (Windows)
- Click Next
- Browse to the file
- Click Next
- Select your destination folder
- Click Next. Make sure you're importing the correct thing
- Click Finish
