Linux: Fewer Bugs Than Rivals

"Linux advocates have long insisted that open-source development results in better and more secure software. Now they have statistics to back up their claims.

According to a four-year analysis of the 5.7 million lines of Linux source code conducted by five Stanford University computer science researchers, the Linux kernel programming code is better and more secure than the programming code of most proprietary software." More...

For those of you going "Huh?" - Linux is a computer operating system that serves as an excellent alternative to Windows. Linux is faster, cheaper, more secure than Windows. It doesn't need computers as expensive as Windows computers. Most software for Linux is free. The average home or office user would not notice any difference between Linux and Windows.

Disable Windows XP Firewall

The whole point of using a firewall is to protect your computer against invasion from the Internet. A good feature of a firewall is to let you know if something invaded your computer anyway. The Windows XP built-in firewall fails at both.

    To disable the Windows firewall:
  • Start --> Settings --> Control Panel --> Network Connections
  • Double-click on your internet connection
  • Properties --> Advanced
  • Uncheck "Protect my computer and network by limiting or preventing access to this computer from the Internet"
  • Save changes
The Windows firewall is then disabled.

Get a third-party firewall such as ZoneAlarm. It is much more secure and much more configurable. The free version is rock-solid; the Pro version is an extremely impressive security tool.
