When in Rome.....
It's been over 2000 years since the Romans set up sanitation, education, public order, irrigation, roads, fresh water systems, etc. Using 'shock and awe' tactics in Iraq - and subsequently failing to rebuild those infrastructure necessities - we've set Mesopotamia back 2000 years. No wonder they're unhappy with us.
My better half pointed out that the Romans did that with the intent of living there - whether in Rome itself, or in the far reaches out the Empire - for the long haul.
Since our Prez abhors nation-building, I have to assume that he jumped right to salting the fields because the plan was to stick around only 'til the oil ran out - or until Halliburton had milked the place for all Halliburton could get.
For those of you who would say that we must be patient, that these things take time.... I agree; too bad the patience didn't start back when the UN inspectors were not given patience and time to look for the WMDs. It's a bit disingenuous to hide behind the need for patience only when it suits one's agenda.patience
