That Was Then, This is Now

GOP wants Alan Keyes To Run For Senate As If he Were an Illinois Resident.

Keyes, a Maryland resident who has criticized others for running for office in states where they don't live, was selected over White House deputy drug czar Andrea Grubb Barthwell. Keyes and Barthwell were selected Tuesday as finalists to fill the vacancy created when Ryan dropped out of the race amid a controversy over the court-ordered release of his divorce file.

"I deeply resent the destruction of federalism represented by Hillary Clinton's willingness to go into a state she doesn't even live in and pretend to represent people there. So I certainly wouldn't imitate it."
Alan Keyes, 2000

Perhaps most problematic for Keyes is that he has few connections to Illinois and has criticized others for carpetbagging. In 2000, conservatives courted Keyes to drop his presidential bid and run against Hillary Rodham Clinton for U.S. Senate in New York, but Keyes blasted the idea and ripped Clinton.

Clinton purchased a home in upstate New York a few months before announcing her run, while Keyes would have to establish residence in Illinois either during his campaign or immediately after the election. According to federal law, senators have to live in the state they are representing only by the time they take the oath of office.

Report Proves Bush Knew He Was Lying About Iraq

Earlier this week, President Bush claimed "we all thought we would find stockpiles of weapons" in Iraq, and claimed that he had no inkling that his pre-war claims about the Iraqi threat were weak.

But as a major new story released today shows, the President and other top administration officials were repeatedly warned before the invasion that its case for war was weak.

The cover story for this month's In These Times analyzes declassified government documents and intelligence reports given to the White House before the war.
- These documents either warned the administration about its WMD and Iraq-al Qaeda claims, or totally debunked them.
- In some cases, intelligence experts explicitly warned top officials not to make the claims they were making, and yet they were ignored.
- The story wholly refutes assertions by the White House and Republicans that it was the intelligence community to blame.
In fact, as the data shows, the White House deliberately ignored intelligence to mislead America.

Boston Billionaires March Over Democrats

billionaires with check for whatever it takes to elect BushThanks to a stunning display of force outside the Democratic National Convention last week, Billionaires for Bush is poised to make waves across America in the month of August.

On Tuesday, July 28, 150 billionaires courageously marched through the streets of Boston, captivating the media, dodging the filthy commoners, and exposing John Kerry's insidious democratic values which threaten our enormous power and wealth. Police and paramilitaries obediently escorted us from Rowes Wharf to the Massachusetts Republican Party offices, where we cheered a speech by our beloved Phil T. Rich, wept through a sermon by the Reverend Dr. Cassius King, and presented George W. Bush with a check for "Whatever it takes" to ensure another four years of putting profits over people.

The next morning we launched our "Get on the Limo" tour before a throng of photographers, and even managed to run over some of the Boston rabble on our way out of town. Over the next month, the fearless Billionaires on board the limo will chronicle their adventures and exploits for all of us to follow.

As is the case with everything we do, by the end of the week we'd managed to capture far more than our share of the corporate media pie, sending our message of privilege and power to voters across America. While Kerry and Edwards were busy pandering to the special interests of everyday Americans, we showed the world that George W. Bush knows his base: the haves and have-mores. As the proletarian- sympathizing Johns promised to reduce America's dependence on foreign oil, we insisted that there's no such thing as "foreign oil" - it all belongs to us! While Kerry pledged to make a first-class education available to second-class citizens, we asked Americans, "Why throw good money at bad people?"

Six Perfectly Good Reasons To Elect George W. Bush

Reason #1: Global Warming!
Thanks to Bush’s pollution policies, if you buy some cheap land in Appalachia today, by the time you’re ready to retire, it’ll be prime oceanfront property.

Reason #2: Cheap Underwear, Bub.
By subsidizing CEOs who move our jobs offshore, George is saving you and me a dime on every pair of Made-in-China shorts we buy.

Reason #3: One Word, Bucko – Yum-yum-yum!
Because of Bush's backing of corporations that are genetically-altering our food supply, you'll soon be able to eat brussel sprouts that not only taste like bon-bons, but also will have your heartburn medicine and erectile dysfunction pills genetically spliced into every bite.

Reason #4: You’ll Never Have To Feel Alone Again, My Friend.
Homeland Security, USA Patriot Act (I and II), FBI, CIA, DEA, ATF, INS, DARPA, ARDA, TIA, CTS, PAL, CAPPS II – and so much more is now out there for us, created or greatly expanded by George to keep us safe.

Reason #5: Rugged Individualism, Compadre.
By whacking budgets, privatizing government, and eliminating public services, George W. is freeing our people to return America to its glory days when great fortunes could be built on that golden ethic of "let the strongest survive."

Reason #6: You Name It!
The environment, the economy, foreign policy, the Pentagon, religion, taxes, judgeships, globalization, wealth, the sanctity of marriage, police power, the budget, global empire, executive authority. . .you name it. In every area, bush & company are remaking America for us, making it right!

Bush Misleads On The State Of The Economy

Bush Misleads On The State Of The Economy

In his radio address Saturday President Bush declared, "this week we received encouraging reports that show our economy is gaining strength." President's Radio Address, 7/31/04. The actual reports, however, suggest otherwise.

A new GDP report by the Commerce Department revealed that the "economy grew at a slow - paced 3 percent annual rate in the second quarter, renewing concerns about a weak overall recovery and the potential for mediocre future job growth." The figure was "the slowest growth rate since the beginning of last year," down 1.5 percent from the previous quarter. Growth in consumer spending also plummeted, falling to just 1 percent - down three points from the previous quarter. "Economic Growth Slows" Newsday, 8/02/04.

On Friday the White House estimated that "the budget deficit would reach $445 billion in this fiscal year, by far the largest shortfall ever." "Record Deficit of $445 Billion Projected for This Fiscal Year".

The administration claims that this figure is an improvement, but in February 2003 the White House estimated that the deficit for 2004 would be just over $300 billion. "Deficits and the Mid - Session Review", Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

Just A Thought

I think that if I were a woman trapped in a man's body, I'd probably feel the need to project a false masculinity by publicly cursing out senators.
